#23 Women’s Soccer Falls 1-0 At Wesleyan

The 23rd-ranked Middlebury women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 road decision to Wesleyan.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Cardinals had a handful of quality scoring chances in the opening minutes. Their best bid happened at the 14:58 mark, but Audrey Lavey's shot from eight yards was denied by a diving Sydney Poppinga to her right.
  • In the 19th minute, the Panthers put together a chance, as Ellie Bavier's skipping blast from 30 yards out was saved following a skidding bounce by Cardinal goalie Sarah Hammond moving to the right.
  • Wesleyan recorded the match's lone goal with 19:48 elapsed in the first half, as Kate Hausladen's volley from the left side slipped inside the far post for the 1-0 lead.
  • Early in the 38th minute, a free kick from just outside the penalty box on the left by Dani Milovanov caromed off the crossbar and back into the field of play. 
  • With just 57 seconds left in the opening half, the Panthers had their best chance to score when Fanny Lodge ripped a right-footed shot from 13 yards, but Hammond dove to her right to thwart the opportunity.
  • Middlebury nearly scored in the 52nd minute when Bavier laced a knuckling shot on goal from 35 yards away, but goalie Molly Brumbach, who came in after the halftime break, denied the chance.
  • Wesleyan produced a pair of quality chances over the next few minutes, with the best opportunity coming when Hausladen's left-footed attempt was saved by Poppinga diving to her right.
  • The Panthers turned up the offensive pressure in the final 20 minutes. Lucy Patton had a shot from just outside the box at the 76:33 mark go just wide left. 
  • Middlebury earned three-straight corners with less than 10 minutes left, as the best chance occurred when Sophia Cole volleyed a left-footed attempt that Brumbach saved on the right post. 
  • The Panthers looked to draw even with five minutes left, but Patton's quick attempt from eight yards away was saved by Brumbach to preserve the final 1-0 score.

  • Poppinga recorded a season-best seven saves in goal for the Panthers.
