Middlebury Dominates Clarkson In Midweek Action

The Middlebury women's soccer team scored once in each half to shutout Clarkson 2-0 in the first meeting between the two programs. Carolyn Days and Margaret Furman each tallied their first career goals during the victory.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury dominated the first half, holding a 16-0 advantage in shots.
  • Fanny Lodge was involved with a trio of great chances early on. She had a pair of header attempts that skimmed above the crossbar, sandwiched around a give-and-go with Lucy Patton that was blocked by a defender.
  • The Panthers threatened to score at the 22:05 mark when Joely Virzi fired a shot on goal from just inside the 18, but Clarkson goalie Molly DiCaprio dove to her right and got her hands on the ball to corral it.
  • Middlebury broke through with 22 seconds left in the opening stanza. An initial point-blank bid by Virzi was denied by DiCaprio, but the hard shot was too much to control, and the ball bounced back into play. The Panthers reset by sending the ball out to the right sideline to Ellie Bavier, who served a cross to the back post. Furman was on the pipe to one-time the feed into the bottom-right corner to make it 1-0.
  • The Golden Knights attempted their first shot on goal count at the 52:55 mark. Angelina Fahrenkrug sent a through ball to Arin Bates, but Bates' shot from 15 yards out was denied by a diving Sydney Poppinga.
  • With 72:16 elapsed, the Panthers looked to double their lead. Virzi beat a trio of Clarkson defenders before firing a shot from the six, but DiCaprio came charging out and smothered the opportunity.
  • Middlebury made it 2-0 during the 75th minute. Emma Binks barreled down the left sideline before crossing the ball on the ground to Days, who was there to one-time the ball into the goal.

NOTES
  • The Panthers have a balanced offense this season, with 13 different goal scorers over the initial 10 games.
