Binks’ Game-Winner Lifts Panthers Past Mules, 2-1

Middlebury's Emma Binks tallied the Panthers' game-winning goal with under five minutes remaining in the contest to lift the women's soccer team past Colby, 2-1.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury opened the scoring with 22:11 expired in the contest. Sophia Cole lofted the ball over the Mules' backline, sending Joely Virzi sprinting past the defenders. Virzi's speed forced Colby goalie MK Marshall to charge out off her line, but Virzi made a move past Marshall and buried the ball into the left panel for the 1-0 edge.
  • The Mules had a good chance to get on the scoreboard during the 24th minute, but Corrigan Rayhill's shot from outside the 18 sailed just above the crossbar.
  • Beginning at the 29:04 mark, Middlebury had a flurry of shots as it looked to increase the lead. The best chance was the first one during the span, but Abby Ward's shot from the right pipe was denied by a diving save from Marshall.
  • Colby knotted the game 1-1 with 52:21 elapsed when Sophie DiGrande rifled a shot from 30 yards out and tucked the ball inside the left pipe.
  • The game-winner came with just under five minutes remaining in the contest. Panther Carolyn Days served the ball from the right sideline into the box. Fanny Lodge redirected the ball with her head to the left, before Binks one-timed it into the net to make it 2-1.
  • The Mules threatened with 31 seconds remaining, but Middlebury goaltender Sydney Poppinga made a diving save to thwart Jackie Portogallo's attempt and secure the victory.

NOTES
  • Binks' game-winning goal was the first marker of her career.
  • The Panthers have had 14 different goal scorers over their opening 11 games.
