Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Edges Connecticut College, 1-0

Middlebury's Emma Binks converted a penalty kick 8:05 into the first half and that was all the women's soccer team needed to edge Connecticut College 1-0. The Panthers were a player down for the final 41:08, but hung on for the win.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury applied pressure in the attacking zone from the opening kickoff, with two shots in the first 2:40 of play.
  • The Panthers continued to press, as Binks drew a foul in the penalty box with 8:05 elapsed. She stepped to the dot, blasting a right-footed shot into the lower-left corner past Camel goalie Sarah Hall's outstretched hands.
  • Binks looked for her second goal of the contest at 23:32, but her bid on the doorstep was saved by Hall charging off her line.
  • Much of the remainder of the opening stanza was played in the midfield, but the Camels made a late push with less than a minute remaining. Sophie Bodor redirected a cross that had spin on it just inside the box, but Middlebury goalie Sydney Poppinga raced toward the bounding ball and smothered it to keep the Panther lead at 1-0 at the half.
  • Two minutes into the second frame, Joely Virzi nearly gave Middlebury a two-goal lead, but her volley from the left hit the right post and caromed away.
  • The Panthers went down a player after a red card was issued with 41:08 remaining in the contest.
  • Middlebury locked in defensively, as the Camels mustered minimal quality scoring chances from that point.
  • Connecticut College looked to even the match at the 61:13 mark, but Jamie Scarpantonio's shot from 10 yards out hit the right post.
  • The Camels had a late chance, but Ella Gazo's header from seven yards out was caught by Poppinga to preserve the 1-0 victory.
NOTES
  • Binks' goal was her second game-winner of the weekend.
  • Poppinga finished with six saves, including five in the final 41:08 of play. She logged every minute in goal over the last three contests, allowing just one goal with 12 saves and two shutouts.
  • The Panthers went 3-0-0 last week, outscoring their opponents 5-1 in the trio of victories.
