Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Upsets #21 Trinity 1-0

The Middlebury women's soccer team scored less than 10 minutes into the opening half, and that was all the Panthers needed to upset #21 Trinity 1-0. Middlebury's victory marks the four-consecutive triumph for the team.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers scored with 7:16 elapsed in the game. Ellie Bavier sent a corner kick into the box, and a Bantam defender deflected the ball to Joely Virzi who one-timed the rebound into the lower left corner for the 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury looked to tack on another tally at the 20:20 mark, but Ella Gagnon's attempt on a cross by Virzi went just wide right.
  • Gagnon threatened again during the 38th minute, but her shot towards the upper right corner was smothered by Trinity goalie Mariana Cournoyer.
  • The Bantams almost equalized just a minute into the second half, but Hannah Storuzuk's shot hit the left pipe and Middlebury goalie Sydney Poppinga was able to corral the rebound off the post.
  • With 52:59 elapsed, Olivia O'Reilly had a great chance to double the Panther lead, but her shot hit the crossbar.
  • Trinity's final quality chance to knot the game came just minutes later when Cassie Lee volleyed a corner kick. The ball looked to cross the goal line, but the official waved it off.
  • Emma Binks looked to increase the lead at 72:08, but her shot toward the bottom right was denied by a diving Cournoyer to keep the victory at 1-0.
