Women’s Soccer Falls 3-1 At Bowdoin

The Middlebury women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 road contest to Bowdoin, robbing the Polar Bears of a shutout with a tally in the final 10 minutes.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • There was a flurry of action in the first 10 minutes of the match, with Ellie Bavier and Bowdoin's Rachel Peacock exchanging chances, but neither team was able to break through.
  • Bowdoin took the lead after 29 minutes of play. Morgan Smiley intercepted a clearing attempt, and challenged Middlebury goaltender Carolyn Kelley one-on-one, before slipping the ball into the net to make it 1-0.
  • Sophia Cole had a good look to score during the 35th minute, but her blast from the far right corner of the 18 yard box whistled just over the crossbar.
  • Cole had another good chance to score the equalizer with just five minutes remaining in the half. Cutting in on her right foot, Cole pulled her shot just wide of the left post.
  • Smiley was on target again, 20 minutes into the second half. Following a pass from Lo Hoglin, Smiley's shot took a deflection and skipped past Kelley and into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
  • Bowdoin took a 3-0 lead with 10 minutes to go when Samaya Bernardo found the back of the net.
  • Middlebury got a goal back in the 84th minute when Bavier fired a free kick from the top of the 18 yard box into the top left corner for the 3-1 final.
NOTES
  • Bavier's goal was her second of the season.
  • Kelley earned her second career start in net for the Panthers.
