Football Tops Wesleyan 24-10 In Home Opener

The Middlebury football team put up strong performances in every facet of the game en route to a 24-10 home-opening victory over Wesleyan. The Panthers had 346 yards of total offense, denied the Cardinals of all three of their fourth-down conversion attempts and recorded double-digits in both pass breakups and quarterback hurries.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Midway through the opening quarter, Wesleyan had a 10-play, 44-yard drive and looked to get on the scoreboard, but Daniel Yoon's field-goal attempt was blocked by Panther Dave Filias to keep the contest deadlocked.
  • Middlebury scored on its opening drive of the second quarter. The Panthers marched down the field with Ben Tauber completing a series of passes before connecting with Donovan Wood on a five-yard toss into the end zone. Andrew Haas converted his point after to make it 7-0.
  • On Middlebury's next drive, Tauber found Anson Clough for a 33-yard touchdown and Haas kicked the PAT for the 14-0 lead.
  • Wesleyan responded on its next possession. Ashton Scott flipped a pass behind the line of scrimmage to Logan Tomlinson on the left sideline, who hooked up with Jenifer Ezra on a 22-yard touchdown pass. Yoon converted the point after try, making it 14-7.
  • Late in the third quarter, Yoon converted a 41-yard field-goal attempt, cutting the Wesleyan deficit to just four (14-10).
  • Yoon looked to pull the Cardinals closer on the opening drive of the fourth quarter, but his attempted boot sailed wide of the uprights.
  • On the ensuing drive, Middlebury's Tauber connected with Wood for an 11-yard scoring strike to give the Panthers a 21-10 advantage.
  • With 8:14 remaining in the game, Panther defensive back Adam Harrington intercepted a pass by Scott, returning the ball 23 yards to put Middlebury in a good position to score. Haas converted a 30-yard field goal to secure the 24-10 triumph for the Panthers.
