Football’s Red Zone Defense Secures 20-10 Victory Over Bowdoin

The Middlebury football team won its third-consecutive game, coming from behind to triumph by a 20-10 score on Bowdoin's home field. The Panther defense stopped the Polar Bears three times in the red zone in the second half to preserve the 10-point lead and secure the victory.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Bowdoin took advantage of the first possession of the game, marching down the field before Jotham Casey booted a 22-yard field goal through the uprights for a 3-0 edge.
  • The Polar Bears intercepted a pass on Middlebury's initial drive before Andre Eden scored a touchdown on a four-yard rush. Casey's point after was good, making it 10-0.
  • With just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Andrew Haas converted a 21-yard field goal to cut the Panther deficit to 10-3. 
  • Middlebury made it an exciting end to the half with just 3:12 left on the clock. The Panthers blocked a Bowdoin punt, before Ben Tauber connected with Greg Livingston for an 18-yard pass to the one-yard line. Carter Stockwell rushed the ball through the gap, before a PAT by Haas knotted the contest 10-10.
  • John McCool sacked Polar Bear Andrew Boel, giving the Panthers the ball back at midfield with 1:49 to go in the half. 
  • Tauber hooked up with Patrick Jamin on a 16-yard pass, before finding Donovan Wood with a 35-yard scoring strike. Haas sent the ball through the uprights for the 17-10 lead heading into intermission.
  • The Panthers carried their momentum into the third quarter, with Haas converting a career-best 32-yard boot on the initial drive of the stanza, making it 20-10. 
  • Bowdoin had a great chance to cut into the Middlebury lead midway through the third stanza. The Polar Bears forced a fumble and recovered the ball, before making their way down to the red zone. Boel found Jed Hoggard with a 22-yard pass, but McCool tackled Hoggard at the four-yard line. Bowdoin was able to creep to the one-yard line, but a strong Panther defense kept it there, forcing a failed field-goal attempt that sailed wide right. 
  • The Polar Bears had another opportunity to score in the fourth quarter during a drive spanning nearly eight minutes. Bowdoin advanced to the two-yard line, but a pass breakup by Adam Harrington, followed by a tackle by McCool turned the Polar Bears over on downs. 
  • With 3:14 left in the game, Bowdoin marched back down the field to the Middlebury 15. The Polar Bears looked to score, but a strong Panther defense stood them up, as Bowdoin turned it over on downs and Middlebury secured the 20-10 victory.
NOTES
  • LeeCharles McNeil recorded a career-high 46-yard rush and totaled a personal-best 86 yards on the ground.
  • Wood had a career-best 39-yard reception during the win.
  • McCool had a stellar game, tying a career high with nine tackles (six solo) and 2.5 tackles for loss totaling 16 yards. He also had one sack and a pass breakup. 
  • Nolan Tibball also recorded a career-best nine stops (five solo). 
  • In addition to converting his longest field goal, Haas was a perfect 2-2 in extra points and field goals.
  • The Panthers recorded their eighth-straight victory against the Polar Bears, improving to 27-7-1 in the series.
