Game Recap: Field Hockey |

#1 Field Hockey Slips Past Hamilton 2-1

The #1 Middlebury field hockey team held off a late surge by Hamilton, slipping past the Continentals 2-1. With the win, the Panthers extended their winning streak to 34-straight victories.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Middlebury began the game quickly on the front foot. After just 1:51 of play, Grace Murphy created the angle to fire a shot on goal, which forced a good save out of Hamilton's Abby Griffin.
  • The Panthers continued to pepper the Continental's goal throughout the opening period. At the 7:21 mark, Amy Griffin and Emily Stone combined for a flurry of shots, eventually culminating in a Stone shot that was denied by Griffin.
  • Middlebury opened the scoring with 1:23 to go in the first quarter. After intercepting a pass in the midfield, Katie George sprinted past the Hamilton defense, before cutting it back to Audrey Lazar who was able to tap the ball into the cage for the 1-0 edge.
  • In the third stanza, the Panthers had their best opportunity to increase their lead. Following back-to-back penalty corners, Lilly Thieberg was set up to blast a shot on goal from the top of the circle, but was denied by Griffin. Thieberg had another chance seconds later, which was blocked just before the goal line. The sequence finally ended when Katie George dragged her effort just wide.
  • Middlebury doubled its advantage just 1:49 into the final quarter. George stole the ball away from the Hamilton defense just inside the circle, dribbled past the defender and slipped the ball past goalie Griffin to make it 2-0.
  • Hamilton began to apply pressure late in the game, scoring in the final minute of play. Following a penalty corner, Alana King was able to fire a shot into the bottom right corner, making it a one score game with 40 seconds to go.
  • The Panthers were able to see out the final seconds of the game to hang on for the 2-1 victory.
NOTES
  • Lazar and George both registered a goal in today's game, equaling Amy Griffin's team-high.
  • The Panthers move to 19-4 overall against Hamilton, and have won the last five meetings, outscoring the Continentals 18-2 over that stretch.
  • The contest was played at Hamilton due to Kohn Field construction obstacles, but the Panthers expect to be back at home on October 2nd.
