Defense Holds Strong As Women’s Soccer Defeats #23 Plattsburgh State

The Middlebury women's soccer team followed up its win Sunday with a victory at nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State by a score of 2-0. The Panthers recorded 27 total shots in the win, and extended their winning streak over the Cardinals to six in a row.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Middlebury owned much of the possession during the first half, consistently keeping the ball in Plattsburgh's defensive end and owning a 13-3 edge in shots.
  • Plattsburgh State had the first true opportunity of the match in the 15th minute, but a rising shot from the doorstep on an open net by Tara Bendsak deflected off the crossbar and went wide to the right.
  • The Panthers continued to apply pressure, breaking the scoreless tie in the 31st minute. Middlebury sent a ball from the right side into the box that deflected off a Cardinal defender. Ella Gagnon rushed onto the loose ball and ripped a left-footed shot into the lower-right corner of the goal from 10 yards out, giving the Panthers the 1-0 advantage.
  • In the early stages of the second half, the Cardinals looked to even the score on a set piece, but a left-footed bending attempt by Kirsten Villemaire hit the crossbar in the 48th minute.
  • In the 54th minute, Middlebury nearly made it a 2-0 contest, but a close range effort from Fanny Lodge was saved by the left foot of Cardinal goalie Lauren Haley.
  • The Cardinals continued to apply pressure in search of an equalizer, with Villemaire forcing multiple strong saves out of Lucy VanNewkirk in the 69th and 75th minutes, respectively.
  • The Panthers doubled their lead in the 84th minute when Joely Virzi latched on to a pass from Ellie Bavier and slotted it into the lower-left corner, past the diving reach of Haley for the final 2-0 decision.
NOTES
  • Gagnon's goal in the 31st minute was the first of her career.
  • Middlebury's first-half score was the initial goal allowed by Plattsburgh State this season, spanning 390:48.
