Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Top-Ranked Panthers Ease Past Union 19-2

The top-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team (10-0) used a balanced attack that had 14 different players score a goal during a 19-2 road victory at Union (2-5) on Tuesday evening. The Panthers have been victorious in 35-straight contests and collected the program's 20th-consecutive road win. Middlebury returns to action on Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. home NESCAC game against #11 Wesleyan.

The Panthers opened the scoring just 1:08 into the game following a Union turnover in the hosts' defensive end. Lily Riseberg got past her defender in the right alley, tucking a shot into the upper-right corner of the goal following a feed from Maggie Coughlin. After a free-position tally from Susan Rowley and a score by Kelcey Dion just 34 seconds apart, Jane Earley posted three of the next four goals for a 7-0 advantage with 7:29 left in the first quarter. Another goal by Rowley and a bouncing tally by Sara Ellinghaus while a player up made the score 9-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Hope Shue recorded her 20th goal of the season at 10:45 while the Panthers were down a player. Callahan Drake and Burdine Atherton each tallied their second markers this spring to make it a 12-0 advantage at halftime.

Coughlin started things for Middlebury in the third quarter at the 13:15 mark with the player advantage, while Madeline Riordan made the score 14-0 with 10:48 left. Union scored twice over the remainder of the quarter, as Greta Maurer found the back of the net with 8:41 left and Drew Charlton tallied with 3:38 remaining. Sandwiched between those goals was the sixth goal of the season by Middlebury's Jamee Numan on a free-position attempt for a 15-2 lead headed to the fourth.

Two goals from Niki Mormile, as well as scores by Emma Inouye and Abby Hillebrecht in the fourth quarter solidified the 19-2 final score.

Earley (3G, A) and Riseberg (G, 3A) led the Panther offense with four points apiece. Earley's four-point output marked the fifth-consecutive game in which she has posted four or more points. Coughlin and Ellinghaus each had a goal and two assists. Erica Barr collected six draw controls and Ellinghaus added four, while Anna Spehr chipped in with three. Annie Enrietto (10-0) earned the win in goal with two saves in 15 minutes, while Allie Battista stopped four shots in the second quarter. Gina Driscoll closed out the game for Middlebury with a quartet of saves in the final two stanzas.

Jenna Paszek took the loss in front of the goal for Union, making six saves in 38:28 of action. Elizabeth Hernberg scooped up a game-high three groundballs for the Dutchwomen.
