The ninth-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team netted a key NESCAC road win on Saturday, securing an 8-1 triumph at Wesleyan. The Panthers (7-2, 2-1) conference play next Saturday, visiting 20th-ranked Amherst for a 2:00 p.m. start.
Middlebury got off to a great start, sweeping all three points in doubles play against the Cardinals (3-5, 2-2).
Stan Morris and
David Vilys won 8-6 in the top position, while the second pairing of
Noah Laber and
Aidan Harris and the third tandem of
Zihao Yuan and
Joe Mairs each won by identical 8-2 scores.
In singles play, Mairs was the first to finish in the sixth slot, winning 6-3, 6-4 to extend the lead to 4-0. Yuan clinched the victory in the fifth position by the scores of 7-5, 6-0.
Morris recorded his team-leading 16th win at singles with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 triumph at #1, while Harris won in three sets (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) in the second spot. Neel Esptein added the final victory of the match for the visitors, coming out on top 6-2, 7-5, 10-2 at #4.
Wesleyan scored its only point of the match at third singles.
