Panthers Double Up Hamilton 10-5 To Win NESCAC Series

The Middlebury softball team plated the first six runs of the game, as the Panthers posted a 10-5 victory at Hamilton (14-9, 2-5) on Saturday to claim the NESCAC West series 2-1. Middlebury (13-8, 5-4) returns home on Friday at 5:00 p.m., opening a three-game conference set with Wesleyan.

For the second-straight day, Middlebury's Abby Santis belted a home run in the first inning to give the Panthers an early lead. She connected for her fourth of the season with a blast to center field for a 1-0 edge.

The Panthers used another homer in the top of the second to increase the advantage to 4-0, as Sophia Marlino hit a three-run shot to left field to bring in Megan Fox and Sophie Bolinger.

Middlebury's offense continued to produce runs in the third frame, pushing two more across home plate. Jen McGann doubled in Noelle Ruschil and scored one batter later on a two-base hit by Bolinger for a 6-0 cushion.

The Continentals cut into the deficit in the home half of the third, scoring three times. Kiana Arcayena drove in the first with a triple and scored on a double by Shelby McVey to make it 6-2. The final run of the frame came on a single up the middle by Charlie Quinn for a 6-3 score.

The Panthers had their biggest inning in the six, scoring four times. Jordyn Johnson plated pinch runner Marina Lyon with an infield hit and Tori Papaleo scampered home on an infield error to push the difference to 8-3. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Ruschil and McGann gave the visitors a 10-3 advantage.

Hamilton trimmed one run off the deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning and one more in the seventh to make the final 10-5.

Middlebury had three players record multiple-hit games, as Bolinger finished 3-3 and reached base on a walk, while Johnson and Marlino each recorded two hits. Abigail Jankowski (2-2) pitched four quality innings of relief, allowing two runs (one earned), to earn the win in the circle.

For the Continentals, Emma Tansky, Vicky Dunn and Quinn all went 2-4 at the plate with Quinn driving in a pair of runs. Tansky (3-3) got the start for Hamilton and took the loss, lasting only 2.2 innings.
