Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

#11 St. Lawrence Slips Past #19 Middlebury

The 19th-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team (6-6) overcame a four-goal deficit to knot the contest 11-11, but #11 St. Lawrence (9-2) stormed back to claim an 18-11 victory. The Panthers travel to Colby on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. start before returning home for the final two regular-season games.

The Saints struck first when Chris Jordan made a move around a Middlebury defender and found the back of the net for a 1-0 edge with 13:19 left on the clock. Judge Murphy made it 2-0 for St. Lawrence just over two minutes later. The Panthers responded with a pair of goals. Bobby Hendry deked a defender and rocketed a siderarm shot into the net, before Tom Conley tucked the ball inside the left pipe to knot the game 2-2 with 5:12 left in the opening stanza. Less than a minute later, a shot from the right side of the crease by Mark Mahoney trickled through traffic for a 3-2 St. Lawrence edge. With nearly a minute to go in the quarter, Middlebury's Tyler Forbes found a cutting Billy Curtis who snuck the ball into the top-right corner with just one tick showing on the shot clock. The Saints took a 4-3 lead with a bouncing shot by Josh Huiatt with 40 seconds left on the clock.

St. Lawrence carried its momentum into the second quarter, tallying a pair of goals in the opening minute to increase the advantage to 6-3. Jack Gorman scooped up the groundball on the opening faceoff, sprinted down the field and found the back of the net. Just 49 seconds later, Jack Hennessey forced a turnover and capitalized with a marker of his own. On the ensuing faceoff, Curtis grabbed the groundball, carried the ball down the field and fired a shot into the right panel to cut the deficit to two (6-4). An initial shot by Mahoney was denied by Middlebury goalie Finn O'Connor, but Mahoney got the rebound and scored a man-up tally at the 12:49 mark. Curtis recorded his second goal of the game with just one second left on the shot clock. His first bid was thwarted by St. Lawrence goaltender William Helm, but Curtis scooped up the roller and scored again to bring the difference back to a pair of goals (7-5). The Saints scored two-straight markers to close out the half. Hennessey tallied while up two players, before Mahoney completed his hat trick with a shot between his legs for the 9-5 lead.

Middlebury came out of the break strong, tallying four-straight goals to start the half. The first came when William Ryan caused a failed clearing attempt, before racing down the field and finding the back of the net. Jack Sheehan followed, rocketing a shot from 25 yards out, before a quick stick by Patrick Jamin and a marker by Conley tied the game 9-9. Jordan answered for the Saints with two-straight goals, including a man-up tally, to make it 11-9 with 7:41 left on the clock. With under five minutes left in the third quarter, Russell Thorndike and Finn Muldoon recorded back-to-back goals just 20 seconds apart to tie the contest 11-11. St. Lawrence began its 7-0 decisive run with 3:16 to go in the third and never looked back en route to the 18-11 win.

O'Connor suffered the loss in the crease for the Panthers, making 13 saves. Helm picked up the win with 10 stops for the Saints during the contest.

Curtis tallied a hat trick during the game and Forbes had three points (1G, 2A) to pace the Middlebury offense. William Munroe and Johnny Kantaros each scooped up four rollers, while Teddy Curran caused a game-high four turnovers.

Jordan led all players with seven points, tallying six goals and one assist, while Mahoney had six points (3G, 3A) for St. Lawrence. Joe Scarfi and Helm each collected five groundballs, while Padraic Condon went 11-18 at the faceoff X with four rollers.
