Five different players recorded multiple-goal efforts, as the #19 Middlebury men's lacrosse team rolled to an 18-10 NESCAC road victory at Colby (4-7, 1-7) on Saturday. The Panthers (7-6, 5-3) continue conference play next Saturday, entertaining #20 Amherst at 3:00 p.m.
The Mules netted two of the first three goals of the contest, but Middlebury finished the opening frame strong, scoring four-straight times to grab a 5-2 lead.
Billy Curtis tied the game 2-2 with 3:34 on the clock, sidestepping a defender and rifling in a shot into the cage, while
Patrick Jamin fired a rocket from 15 yards and later added a man-up tally with 59 seconds remaining. Curtis tacked on a final goal with seven ticks left in the frame for a 5-2 advantage.
The Panthers carried that momentum into the second stanza, as
Jack Sheehan scored to make it 6-2, before Curtis reached up and intercepted a clearing attempt by Mule goalie Matt Suffredini, before depositing the ball into an empty net. Colby's Jack Rickards ended the Middlebury run with a low shot that cut the margin to 7-3 with 10:47 on the clock. The Panthers gained more separation in the final 6:32, tallying four-consecutive goals to enter the half with a 12-5 cushion. Middlebury showed plenty of scoring balance in the run with four different players finding the back of the net.
Gray Thomas got the visitors going in the third quarter, using a high shot after circling the crease for a 13-5 lead with 1:25 expired. Middlebury led 15-7 at the end of the frame, as
Tyler Forbes cashed in on a man-up opportunity from the left wing with 49 seconds remaining for his 100th-career point in a Panther uniform.
The lead reached double digits (17-7) in the opening minutes of the final frame, as
Russell Thorndike scored from the top of the crease and Sheehan went low for his fourth marker of the contest. Colby made a late push scoring three of the game's final four goals, but the Panthers controlled the play in the closing minutes to keep the final score at 18-10.
Curtis and Sheehan each scored four times in the victory, while Thomas recorded the hat trick and Jamin and Thorndike each netted a pair.
