The 16th-ranked Middlebury men's lacrosse team (6-5) capitalized on six unanswered goals in the second quarter to post a 15-7 victory over Babson (5-6) on Sunday. The Panthers return home on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. tilt with St. Lawrence.
Middlebury needed just 10 seconds after the opening draw for
Gordon Pollock to put the Panthers on the board. Babson got goals from Topher Bower and Connor Karsh midway through the frame to pull ahead, but
William Ryan scored for the visitors with 20 seconds left in the quarter to deadlock the score at 2-2.
The second stanza belonged to Middlebury as the Panthers outscored Babson 6-0 in the 15 minute span, with
Tyler Forbes and
Jack Sheehan scoring twice each and
Billy Curtis and Ryan adding one apiece.
Chi Chi Price scored a pair for Babson in the early minutes of the third quarter, but both times Middlebury had an answer, first by
Russell Thorndike and then by Sheehan. The teams traded four goals to end the third quarter with Middlebury up, 12-6. Lee Sipes scored the first goal of the fourth quarter for Babson to slice the margin to 12-7, but Jamin, Sheehan and
Coleman Nye closed out the scoring for the Panthers to secure the 15-7 win.
Middlebury had the advantage on the stat sheet in shots (50-40), ground balls (40-22) and face-offs (17-9). Babson was good on 24 of 27 clears while the Panthers were 21 of 22.
Forbes contributed three goals and an assist to the Middlebury attack and Curtis was good for a goal and three assists. Ryan tallied two goals and one assist and
Finn McCarthy and
Patrick Jamin registered a goal and an assist each.
William Munroe was 10 of 12 face-offs and
Garrett Hawthorne took 7-of-12.
Finn O'Connor made 10 saves in goal for the Panthers.
Price scored a pair of goals to lead the Babson effort as six different players scored. Bower tallied a goal and an assist, and Karsh, Sammy Kalishman, Matt Stucchi and Sipes all scored one goal apiece. Grey Sunderland and Drew Thomas grabbed six and five ground balls, respectively. Mac Mowat matched his season-high with 16 saves in goal.
