Second-Half Surge Propels #3 Middlebury Past #11 York

The third-ranked Middlebury women's lacrosse team (5-0) outscored #11 York 7-2 in the second half, propelling the Panthers to an 11-5 road victory over the Spartans (4-3) on Tuesday. Middlebury takes on its second opponent in a four-game week on Thursday when they play at #8 The College of New Jersey.

The Panthers opened the scoring with 11:05 left on the clock in the first quarter when Jane Earley converted a free-position attempt for a 1-0 edge. Middlebury doubled its lead less than a minute later when Kelcey Dion snuck a low shot past the Spartan goalie for her fifth tally of the season. York had a great chance to cut the deficit in half with 8:54 remaining with a player advantage, but Logan Ward's sidearm shot was denied by Panther goalie Annie Enrietto.
Niki Mormile looked to increase the advantage at the 7:23 mark, but her free-position attempt hit the crossbar and ricocheted away. The Spartans broke through with just under a minute to play in the first quarter when Mia Alverez sent a feed from behind the goal to Ward, who tucked the ball inside the post to make it 2-1.

York knotted the game at two goals apiece with 12:38 left in the second stanza with an extra player. Celly Arthur sent an inside feed to Riley Roeder, who found the back of the goal, before Alverez scored just 28 seconds later to give the Spartans a 3-2 edge. Middlebury responded with 11:20 remaining when Mormile cut across the circle from right to left and found the inside right panel of the goal to knot the game at 3-3. Panther Hope Shue sent a pass to Anna Spehr on the doorstep, before Spehr spun and slipped the ball past goalie Bella Garabo to make it 4-3 heading into the break.

Middlebury came out of the intermission strong, tallying seven unanswered goals. Shue got things going in the second minute of the third quarter with a pair of free position markers, before Maggie Coughlin scored during a player advantage and Kelcey Dion converted a free position to make it 8-3.
