Samantha Hausman pitched a no-hitter to lead the Middlebury softball team past Grinnell 8-0, before the Panthers edged Wellesley 7-5 in the second meeting in as many days. Middlebury (3-0) has a quick turnaround, taking on Washington and Jefferson at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, followed by a 1:15 p.m. meeting with Kalamazoo.
In the first game of the day, Hausman became just the seventh person in program history to pitch a no-hitter as she struck out five over five innings of work. The no-hitter was the ninth for Middlebury in the record books.
The Panthers came out swinging, with
Jen McGann hitting a home run on the team's first at-bat of the game. Sophia Bolinger reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on a single by
Noelle Ruschil. Bolinger and Ruschil each stole a base, before
Abby Santis drove in Bolinger with a single through the right side. Ruschil later touched home on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 after the first inning.
In the bottom of the third, Santis singled to left center before
Sophia Marlino homered to drive in two RBI. Leading 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Ruschil hit a home run to drive in a pair of runs and make it 7-0. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Ruschil walked to drive in
Jordyn Johnson and make it an 8-0 final.
McGann, Marlino and Ruschil each had a homer during the win, while Marlino had one run on two hits with three RBI and a double. Ruschil scored twice with a pair of hits and three RBI, while Bolinger had two runs on three at-bats.
In the afternoon, Middlebury met Wellesley for the second day in a row. The Blue jumped on the board with a run in the bottom of the first. Ingrid Hsu singled to left field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Elli DeCleene and touched home plate on a double by Hayley Moniz for the 1-0 edge.
The Panthers answered in the top of the second when Marlino singled, before scoring on a double by
Nina Schroeder.
Marina Lyon then reached on a throwing error which drove Schroeder in for the 2-1 lead.
Hsu led off the third for Wellesley with a single to shortstop. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and was later driven in by Lauren Young to make it 2-2.
Middlebury reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth after a single by Schroeder.
Lizzie Hannafey pinch ran for Schroeder, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a single by Johnson. Later, McGann singled to bring home Hannafey. The Panthers extended the lead to 4-2 in the fifth. Santis hit a double to left field and scampered home on a throwing error. Middlebury continued to increase the advantage during its next at-bat. Johnson led off the inning with a single up the middle and scored on an error by the centerfielder. Later, with runners on second and third, Ruschil doubled to drive in Bolinger and McGann and make it 7-2. The Panthers loaded the bases again, but the Blue were able to work out of the inning.
Wellesley responded in the bottom of the seventh. Hsu and DeCleene singled to start the inning, before each advancing on a wild pitch and later scoring on a throwing error. Moniz doubled to bring home Marisa Hensch and make it 7-5, but Lyon recorded an out at shortstop and
Jewel Ashbrook struck out the final batter to secure the win for Middlebury.
Ashbrook (1-0) earned the win in the circle, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six over the final 4.1 innings. Young suffered the loss for the Blue.
Ruschil recorded a double and a triple to go along with two RBI, while McGann and Schroeder each had one run on two hits with one RBI. Santis scored once on a pair of hits, including a double.
Hsu had three runs on three hits for Wellesley, while Moniz had two hits and a pair of RBI.
