Panthers Drop 3-1 Decision At Hamilton

The Middlebury men's ice hockey team fell by a score of 3-1 to Hamilton on Friday in New York.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers looked for the lead nearly five minutes into the first period, but a rising wrist shot by Wyatt Pastor was saved by the pad of Continental netminder Charlie Archer.
  • Middlebury kept up its offensive pressure, as a slap shot by Antoine Belisle just over nine minutes in from between the circles was saved by Archer with his blocker.
  • Hamilton's Cade Groton opened the scoring at the 12:26 mark, pouncing on a rebound on the right post to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
  • Immediately after the goal, the Panthers were swarming the net looking for the equalizer. The Hamilton defense didn't budge, denying a trio of attempts to maintain the 1-0 lead.
  • The Continentals doubled their advantage at 13:48 when Sean McAvoy tipped in a shot from the point to make the score 2-0 after one period.
  • Scoring chances and shots were hard to come by in the second period. Belisle had a great opportunity just 32 seconds in when he skated into the zone with some speed, but Archer pushed to his right and saved the rising shot with his body.
  • Middlebury goalie Jake Horoho continued his strong play at 8:10 of the second period, saving a shot by James Philpott on a two-on-one break.
  • The Panthers cut the deficit to one (2-1) with 1:01 left in the period during a power play, as Chris Garbe wristed a shot from a tough angle on the right that tucked into the top-right corner.
  • Hamilton nearly regained its two-goal lead moments later, but Horoho saved a shot from just outside the crease by Ryan Brown to keep it a 2-1 score after 40 minutes of play.
  • The Continentals pushed their lead to 3-1 just 50 seconds into the third period. Nick Hawkins collected the loose puck in front after a scramble and fired a shot into the back of the net.
  • Middlebury looked to score while shorthanded just over seven minutes into the period, but Garbe's bid whistled toward Archer who got a piece of the puck with his blocker to send it wide.
  • Jackson Krock had a breakaway chance for Hamilton with 5:25 left, but Horoho stood his ground and made the save with his glove to keep it a two-goal contest.
  • The Panther goalie was pulled with 1:47 on the clock in favor of the extra skater. Nolan Moore produced the best chance when he blasted a shot with 30 seconds left, but Archer saved the bid for the final 3-1 score.
NOTES
  • The goal was Garbe's second of the season.
  • Middlebury and Hamilton played for the 135th time in a series that dates back to the 1924-25 season, with the Panthers owning a 91-37-7 advantage.
