Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men’s Hockey Falls At Amherst

The Middlebury men's ice hockey team fell 6-0 at Amherst on Saturday, wrapping up first-semester action. The Panthers return to Kenyon Arena on New Year's Eve to host their annual holiday tournament.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Scoring chances were tough to come by in the opening period for the two teams. The Mammoths had their best opportunity of the stanza when a shot on the drive by Ryan Corcoran from the left side was saved by the body of goalie Adam Wisco at the 8:53 mark.
  • The Panthers cycled the puck around near the midway point of the opening period, as Amherst goalie Connor Leslie made a pair of key saves. He padded away a wrister from Chris Garbe followed by a laser off the stick of Jin Lee from between the circles to keep the game scoreless.
  • Middlebury had another great chance in the final minute, but a rising shot by Lee at 19:25 was saved to send the game into the intermission deadlocked at 0-0.
  • The Panthers came out firing in the opening minute of the second period while shorthanded, but a shot by Lee sailed just wide and a bid by Antoine Belisle was saved by Leslie.
  • Amherst took the lead on a power play at the 8:33 mark. Connor Merrill redirected a shot from between the circles that found the upper-right corner of the goal for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Panthers nearly tied the contest at the 10:40 mark when Lee skated through the Mammoth defense, but Leslie stood his ground and stopped the rushing Lee.
  • Amherst doubled its lead (2-0) at 15:47 with the extra skater, as Zachary Murray tipped in a shot from the right circle.
  • The Mammoths pushed the contest to 3-0 with 19 seconds left in the period when Josh Burke wristed a shot on the rush from the right side.
  • Amherst continued peppering the Middlebury defense in the third, tallying a pair of power-play markers, before Tyler Bourque completed the scoring at 19:44 for the final 6-0 score.
NOTES
  • Middlebury and Amherst played for the 90th time today.
  • The Panthers hold a 63-22-5 advantage in the all-time series that dates back to 1925-26.
  • Goalie Thomas Giroux logged his first collegiate action in Saturday's third period.
