#12 Men’s Basketball Races Past Thoroughbreds

The 12th-ranked Middlebury men's basketball team earned a 73-53 victory over Skidmore on Friday night. Alex Sobel was dominant in the win, scoring 29 points, pulling down 20 rebounds and blocking seven shots. 
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jaden Bobbett rattled off five-unanswered points to start the contest, as Middlebury rushed out to a 7-0 lead after only 3:04. 
  • The Thoroughbreds countered with an 8-0 run over the ensuing 3:32, taking an 8-7 edge.
  • Trailing 9-8, the Panthers rattled off 14 of the next 18 points. Sobel capped the run with a layup at the 6:23 mark, giving the visitors a 21-14 lead.
  • Middlebury increased its advantage to as many as 12 (32-20) on a jumper by Sobel with 2:21 remaining.
  • A late Skidmore three-pointer would see the Panthers head into the locker room with a 32-23 lead.
  • The Thoroughbreds cut the deficit to seven (38-31) on a Greg Skoric dunk with 4:58 elapsed, but Middlebury responded, pushing its lead to 48-35 on a David Brennan jump shot with 11:08 to go.   
  • Leading 59-51 with 5:43 left in the contest, the Panthers tallied eight-unanswered points to push the lead to 16 (67-51) with 3:40 remaining.
  • The Panthers didn't look back, easing to the 73-53 triumph.
NOTES
  • Sobel's seven blocks give him 197 in his career, moving him into second in Middlebury's record book. He had denied at least one shot in 33-straight contests.
  • With the win, the Panthers have now won six straight against Skidmore and 16 of the last 17.
