#13 Men’s Basketball Snaps Carnegie Mellon’s Unbeaten Streak with 74-68 Victory

The 13th-ranked Middlebury men's basketball team earned a tough 74-68 victory over Carnegie Mellon in a battle of two undefeated teams. The game was a part of the NESCAC/UAA Challenge, and the Panthers will conclude the tournament on Sunday when they face off with #10 Rochester.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • With the score knotted at 8-8, Middlebury went on a 13-2 run, culminating in a Sam Stevens layup with 9:11 remaining for the 21-10 lead. 
  • The Tartans responded with a 12-2 burst of their own, closing the gap to one (23-22) with 4:10 left in the half. 
  • Just over a minute later, Evan Flaks and Noah Osher scored jumpers on back-to-back possessions to increase the Panther lead to five (29-24).
  • Carnegie Mellon finished the first half strong, scoring nine of the final 12 points to take a 33-32 edge heading into the locker room. 
  • The first 10 minutes of the half featured eight lead changes and three ties as the squads vied for a crucial advantage.
  • Trailing 51-48 midway through the stanza, Middlebury locked down the Tartans on defense and tallied six unanswered points to take a 54-51 lead.
  • Carnegie Mellon would not go away, and leveled the game with a three-pointer on the next possession. 
  • With 5:15 left in the half, Alex Sobel sparked the decisive 7-0 run with a layup, as the Panthers took the lead for good (61-54). 
  • The Tartans made a late run, but Middlebury was able to see out the final 2:47, winning the game 74-68.
NOTES
  • Sobel notched his 25th career double-double and fourth of the season, registering 19 points and pulling down 17 rebounds.
  • Sobel also tied a career high of seven blocks in the win. He has had at least one blocked shot in the last 30 games.
  • Sam Stevens led all scorers with 22 points and has connected on at least one three-pointer in 26 of 28 career games played.
  • The Panthers improve to 5-0 for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
