Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#3 Middlebury Comes Up Short Against #11 Amherst

The #3 Middlebury women's ice hockey team came up short against #11 Amherst, suffering a 4-2 loss in Kenyon Arena.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Panther Britt Nawrocki came out strong, getting the first shot off with just 18 seconds elapsed, but her attempt was blocked by a Mammoth defender.
  • Amherst opened the scoring with 11:44 expired. Maeve Reynolds skated one-on-one toward the Middlebury goal, and slipped the puck into the net for the short-handed tally.
  • With 14 seconds remaining in the period, M. Thompson's bid looked to go in the goal as Amherst erupted in celebration, but the officials waved it off and the Mammoths skated into the locker room with a 1-0 edge.
  • The Panthers knotted the contest with 2:55 elapsed in the middle frame. Jordan Hower poked the puck to Julia Johnson at the top of the left faceoff circle, before Johnson's snipe found its way through traffic and into the net to make it 1-1.
  • Midway through the period, Claudia Vira sent a beautiful cross-ice pass to Hower who received the puck just inside the blueline. Hower had a breakaway attempt, but an Amherst player tripped her to deny the shot, resulting in a power play for the hosts.
  • The Panthers took a 2-1 edge with 4:55 expired in the final stanza. Cece Ziegler sent a pass from the top of the left circle to Vira on the right, before Molly MacQueen redirected Vira's slap shot into the goal.
  • The Mammoths responded less than two minutes later. An initial bid by Carley Daly was denied by netminder Sophia Merageas, but Reynolds was there to one-time the rebound and knot the contest 2-2.
  • Amherst took the lead for good at the 11:45 mark when Ellie DeCarlo's shot from the right dot trickled into the goal to make it 3-2.
  • Middlebury pulled its goalie with 1:17 remaining in favor of the extra skater, but the Mammoths tacked on an empty netter for the 4-2 final.
NOTES
  • MacQueen's goal was the first in her career.
  • The loss was the first for the Panthers in Kenyon Arena since March 8, 2020, ending a 21-home game winning streak.
  • The teams will play again on Saturday to complete the weekend series.
