Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Third-Ranked Women’s Hockey Downed By #11 Amherst

The third-ranked Middlebury women's ice hockey team fell by a 4-2 score to #11 Amherst on Saturday in Kenyon Arena.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers started the game with a quick offensive burst, scoring just 1:25 into the opening period. Selia Coady blasted a wrist shot from the right point that found its way through traffic and tucked inside the right post for the 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury increased its advantage with 4:56 expired. Maddie Bayard had her shot from the right circle saved by Mammoth goalie Natalie Stott, but the rebound found the stick of Ashley McDonald who poked the loose puck into the left side of the net for the 2-0 lead.
  • Amherst cut the deficit to one (2-1) at the 16:01 mark when the Mammoths fired a trio of shots at Panther netminder Sophia Will. The Middlebury goalie stopped the first two attempts, but Jayna Park was there to tap the rebound just across the line.
  • The Mammoths tied the contest at 2-2 just 90 seconds later when Anna Baxter lifted her shot under the crossbar.
  • The Panthers produced their best scoring chance of the second period when a shot from the left point by Claudia Vira was saved by Stott before it wiggled just short of the goal line and Stott covered it.
  • Amherst took the lead for good at 14:33 after gaining possession in its offensive zone. Kate Pohl pounced on the loose puck, dropping a pass to Carley Daly who laced a one-timer at a tough angle inside the right post for a 3-2 edge.
  • The Mammoths fired multiple shots at Will in the opening minutes of the final period, cashing in at the 3:14 mark. Ellie DeCarlo shoveled in a bid on the doorstep for a 4-2 lead.
  • The Panthers pulled Will for the final 3:08 of the contest. Middlebury pressed with the extra skater and drew a penalty shot with 1:34 remaining, but Stott saved the attempt with her right pad to secure the 4-2 triumph for Amherst.
NOTES
  • Coady's goal was the first in her career. She also picked up the first assist in a Middlebury uniform on the Panthers' second goal.
