Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Edged by Amherst, 2-1 in Double-Overtime Thriller

The fourth-seeded/#20 Middlebury men's soccer team was edged by third-seeded/#6 Amherst, 2-1 after 110 minutes of play. The Panthers will now have to wait and see if they will play a part in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will take place on Monday, November 7.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Middlebury had the first good chance of the match. At the 3:16 mark, Luke Madden's headed effort from four yards out was palmed over the crossbar by a jumping Mammoth goalie Bernie White.
  • Middlebury goalie Ryan Grady made a crucial stop at the 9:47 mark. Ada Okoregheye took a shot from inside the six, which Grady dove to his left to deny.
  • With 15:40 elapsed, Jordan Saint-Louis struck a left-footed, knuckling shot from 25 yards away that was caught on one bounce on the left side by White.
  • The Mammoths opened the scoring at the 22:32 mark. Fynn Hayton-Ruffner headed a Niall Murphy cross from the right side into the upper-left corner, giving Amherst the 1-0 edge.
  • With 10 minutes remaining in the half, Aidan Curtis connected on a header following a cross, but Grady dove to his right to repel the strike.
  • Only 27 seconds into the second half, Middlebury scored the equalizer. Saint-Louis whipped a corner kick into the box, before Michael McFarlane directed his header into the bottom-right corner, making the game 1-1.
  • Grady was forced to make another good save at the 49:59 mark. Okoregheye dribbled past multiple defenders in the box, before his near-post effort was smothered by Grady.
  • With 20 minutes remaining, Amherst nearly scored the potential go-ahead goal. Okoregheye clipped a left-footed cross to Curtis, whose header glanced off the left post.
  • In the final minute of play, Laurens ten Cate fired a shot on goal, which was denied by Grady, leaving nothing to separate the two sides after 90 minutes.
  • Saint-Louis opened the overtime period by forcing a save from White. His long-range free kick was headed for the bottom-right corner, but the goalkeeper was able to push it wide.
  • Just one minute later, Amherst took the lead. With 7:46 remaining in the first overtime, Shawn Rapal flicked on a long throw-in, which reached Curtis who tucked the ball past Grady and into the bottom-right corner.
  • Middlebury had two opportunities to level the score late in the second overtime period. At the 108:32 mark, Andrew Juarez drove a volley that whistled just wide of the post from 25 yards away. With under 30 seconds to go, Casey Lund redirected a header on target, but White made the save to see out the rest of the match.
NOTES
  • This was Middlebury's 19th appearance in the semifinal round of the NESCAC Tournament.
  • McFarlane's goal was just his second career goal for Middlebury.
  • Middlebury has the most NESCAC Tournament wins (26).
  • The Panthers are one of three schools to compete in all 21 conference tournaments (Amherst, Williams).
