#20 Men’s Soccer Suffers 3-2 Loss To Rowan In NCAA First Round

The 20th-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team came up just short in the first round of NCAA Tournament action, falling 3-2 to Rowan.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Both teams started the contest firing on all cylinders offensively. The Panthers looked for the early lead 4:23 into the game, but Kyle Nilsson's header went just wide to the left.
  • Rowan took a 1-0 edge with 10:58 elapsed following a set piece. Davide Caputo's shot from six yards out was stopped by the arms of Panther goalie Ryan Grady. The rebound caromed to the right, as Gil Ferrera volleyed the loose ball into the left side of the goal.
  • Middlebury answered to level the contest just 1:28 later when a Prof foul in the box produced a penalty kick. Jordan Saint-Louis calmly stepped to the dot, burying a left-footed shot just past the outstretched hands of goalie Dylan Aportela.
  • The Profs nearly regained the lead with 14:33 expired, but Turlough Gartlan's header was saved by Grady just under the crossbar.
  • The Panthers took a 2-1 lead with 25:44 expired, utilizing a great individual effort from Saint-Louis. He dribbled toward the goal line on the left side, sending a cross that found the head of Nilsson on the far post.
  • Rowan nearly tied the match with 17:55 remaining in the opening half, but Mason Martelloni's rising shot sailed just over the crossbar.
  • Middlebury looked for a two-goal lead with less than seven minutes left in the first half as Aprotela came charging off his line, but Brendan Barry's tough-angle shot hit the outside of the net to send Middlebury into the halftime break ahead 2-1.
  • After some scoring chances by both teams in the initial minutes of the second half, the Profs tied the match at 2-2 with 17:46 gone. Gartlan chested a ball toward a charging Johnny Troiano, who blasted a volley into the upper-left corner.
  • After a Panther foul 30 yards away, Rowan took a 3-2 lead on a set piece with 21:47 remaining. The Profs sprinted out of a huddle near the ball, as Tyler Yates blasted a right-footed shot that tucked inside the right post.
  • Middlebury searched for the equalizer in the final two minutes. The first chance came on a spinning shot by Saint-Louis with 1:31 left, but it was blocked by a Prof defender. Exactly one minute later, a driving shot by Saint-Louis was saved by a sprawling Aportela diving to his right. On the ensuing Middlebury corner kick, a header by Michael McFarlane went wide in the waning seconds for the final 3-2 score.
