Volleyball Falls to Williams 3-1 in NESCAC Quarterfinals

The sixth-seeded Middlebury volleyball team was defeated by third-seeded Williams in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC Tournament, 3-1. The Panthers made their 23rd straight appearance in the tournament, and is one of just three teams to compete in every championship since its inception.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The match was close early on, before Williams put together a 5-1 spurt to take a 15-10 lead.
  • Middlebury battled back, as Lexi Linafelter recorded two kills to cut the deficit to four (16-12). 
  • Williams responded with a 9-1 run, to close out the first set, 25-14.
  • Trailing 3-1 in the second frame, the Panthers strung together a 8-2 run, with Katie Kraczkowsky contributing two kills and a service ace. 
  • Later in the set, Middlebury rattled off a 4-1 spurt to make it 16-12. 
  • Both sides continued to exchange points throughout the remainder of the set. 
  • With the score knotted at 26-26, the teams went back and forth, before Williams was able to edge Middlebury 29-27.
  • The Panthers jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set on the back of two kills from Laney Sullivan and a Kelly Ferrero service ace. 
  • The Ephs responded with a 4-0 burst to tie the set at 10-10. Williams looked to close out the match, leading 21-18, but Middlebury rattled off four unanswered points to regain the lead 22-21. 
  • From there, the Panthers scored three of the last five points to secure the third set 25-23.
  • Deadlocked at 13-13, Williams went on a 4-0 spurt, capped by a Christina Conforti service ace, to make it 17-13
  • Middlebury battled back, bringing the score to within one (20-19) on a kill from Lucy Ambach.
  • The Ephs were able to handle the Panthers' late surge, taking five of the final six points to win the set, 25-20, and secure the 3-1 triumph.

NOTES
  • Gabbie O'Toole recorded 40 assists tonight, which is a new career-high over four sets.
  • O'Toole has registered at least 20 assists in all 50 matches she has played at Middlebury.
  • Kraczkowsky matched her career-best 15 kills, while Ambach set a new personal-best with 13.
