Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

#1 Panthers Edged In Overtime By #6 Wisconsin-River Falls

The #1 Middlebury women's hockey team fell to #6 University of Wisconsin-River Falls 3-2 in overtime in the championship game of the Panther/Cardinal Classic hosted by Plattsburgh State. With the loss, the Panthers saw their NCAA Division III record 31 game winning streak come to an end, a mark dating back to January 21, 2020.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Falcons tested goaltender Sophia Will early, with a flurry of shots in the first four minutes of the opening period. The Falcons had three chances over a 30 second span that were denied by Will.
  • UW River Falls broke through with 7:31 elapsed. Following a faceoff win, Braelyn Sathers fired a shot on net from the right circle, which was saved by Will. The rebound fell to Ellie Brice in front of the net and she flicked the puck into the right corner for a 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury looked to equalize at the 7:00 mark. Cece Ziegler skated into the offensive zone and blasted a shot from just inside the blue line that rattled off the crossbar.
  • The Panthers continued to apply pressure and just under 30 seconds later, Molly MacQueen had back-to-back close range efforts thwarted by Sami Miller.
  • The Falcons peppered Will's net for the remainder of the period, but the goalie was up to the task, stopping 15 attempts in the first period.
  • UW River Falls nearly doubled its lead after 3:30 in the second period. Bailey Olsen rushed into the Middlebury zone and swept a backhanded effort on goal that was pushed aside by Will.
  • The Panthers leveled the scoring with 8:15 remaining in the middle stanza. Maddie Bayard's pass found Sabrina Kim at the point. Kim fired a low, driven shot on frame that beat Miller and nestled in the bottom left corner to make it 1-1.
  • With 18:16 gone, Britt Nawrocki saw her bid from the left circle saved. Eva Hendrickson immediately followed it up with a shot from straight on which was also denied by Miller, leaving nothing to separate the teams after two periods.
  • After just a minute of action in the third period, Megan Goodreau broke away and was one-on-one with Will. Goodreau went to the backhand, but a brilliant sprawling butterfly save from Will kept the score deadlocked.
  • UW River Falls took a 2-1 advantage with 12:15 left in the game. Brice broke away from the Middlebury defense and centered a pass to Maddie McCollins who tapped in the puck at the edge of the crease.
  • With 4:46 remaining, the Falcons almost scored a third tally, but Will stopped a long drive by MaKenna Aure and the subsequent rebound from Alex Hantge with a diving save.
  • The Panthers earned a power play with 2:07 remaining in the contest, and made the extra skater count. With just 14 seconds left in regulation, Claudia Vira fired a shot from the blue line and Nawrocki crashed the net to stuff the puck home and send the contest into overtime.
  • With 56 seconds remaining in the overtime period, the UW River Falls scored the winning goal. Emma Schmitz skated into the Middlebury zone and combined with Aure, who was able to beat Will on the backhand from close-range, making the final score 3-2.
