Men’s Hockey Edged In Overtime By Colby, 3-2

The Middlebury men's hockey team opened its 2022-23 season on Friday, dropping a 3-2 decision in overtime to Colby in Kenyon Arena.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Panthers looked for the early lead in the first period, but Paddy Bogart's shot 5:57 into the contest hit the right pipe and glanced away.
  • Colby tallied the first goal in the back-and-forth contest with 1:23 remaining in the stanza. John McElaney skated down the left side, sending a pass toward the crease that Jake MacDonald redirected into the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead.
  • Middlebury came out of the gates strong in the second period, peppering Mule goalie Andy Beran with multiple shots. The Panthers finally broke through with 7:05 elapsed to knot the contest at 1-1. Jin Lee tapped in a centering pass from EMack Bentley on the right side of the crease for the equalizer.
  • Middlebury applied pressure in the period's late stages, but three-straight Panther shots from close range were saved by Beran's pads to keep it tied at 1-1 headed to the third period.
  • The Mules regained a one-goal advantage 11:07 into the third with an extra skater. Henry Molson ripped a one-timer from just inside the right dot to give Colby a 2-1 edge.
  • The Panthers leveled the score 4:51 later when Antoine Belisle tapped in a rebound on the left doorstep, making it 2-2.
  • The Mules nearly scored their third goal with 1:04 left in regulation, but Ryan Doolin's bid on a breakaway was denied by Panther goalie Jake Horoho to send the game to overtime.
  • Skating 3-on-3 in the extra period, the Mules took advantage of a Middlebury penalty to give Colby a fourth skater. Doolin's initial shot was blocked on the right side, but Tyler Crist rifled a one-timer between the circles that hit the left pipe and deflected into the goal for the game-winning tally.
NOTES
  • Bentley's assist was the 25th of his career in a Middlebury uniform.
