Men’s Soccer Earns 2-0 Victory Over Hamilton

The 20th-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Hamilton on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the fourth-seeded Panthers advance to the NESCAC semi final for the seventh time in the last eight years. Middlebury will take on the third-seeded Amherst in one semifinal, while eighth-seeded Connecticut College and second-seeded Williams play in the other contest.

 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Continentals first chance came in the 10th minute. Following a foul just outside the box, Luke Ehrenfreund took a free kick that was on frame, but Panther goalie Ryan Grady denied the bid.
  • The Panthers opened the scoring just 42 seconds later. Jordan Saint-Louis dribbled past two defenders on the left side of the 18-yard box before blasting a shot on frame. Continental goalie Ben Ziegler made the initial save, but the rebound fell to Tyler Payne who fired the ball into the roof of the net, making the score 1-0.
  • Hamilton's best chance of the first half came at the 32:44 mark. Following a scramble in the box, the ball fell to Margaronis Pandelis, who hit a shot that whistled inches wide of the top-right corner.
  • At the 57:50 mark, Middlebury nearly doubled its advantage. Saint-Louis struck a long-range, left-footed effort that hit the post, ricocheted off the keeper and back into play. The loose ball found its way to Alem Hadzic, who drove a low cross to Payne, but Payne's bid was denied on the doorstep by Ziegler.
  • Hamilton continued to apply pressure and had a chance for the equalizer at the 69:09 mark. Following a corner, Ravi Travers and Luke Peplowski both had chances in the box, but the Panther defense held strong and blocked both strikes.
  • Middlebury scored its second goal with less than five minutes remaining in the contest. With Hamilton pushing for an equalizer, Gavin Randolph rushed beyond the Continental backline and slipped in Hadzic, who slid the ball into the left corner of the net, to finish the game.
NOTES
  • Payne and Hadzic both recorded their fourth goals of the season, good for second on the team.
  • The NESCAC Tournament Championship Weekend will be hosted by Williams next Saturday and Sunday.
