Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#20 Women’s Soccer Edged By #13 Williams 1-0

The 20th-ranked Middlebury women's soccer team was edged 1-0 by #13 Williams in the regular-season finale. The Panthers have secured a spot in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament, but will wait to find out their seeding until after the final game is completed on Tuesday night.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Ephs had a quality chance with just under two minutes elapsed. Claire Tolliver sent the ball over the top of the defensive unit, sending Blakeley Buckingham running onto it. Middlebury goalie Sydney Poppinga charged out of the box, challenging Buckingham and thwarting the attempt.
  • The Panthers looked to get on the scoreboard with 19:56 expired. Lucy Patton sent a cross from the right sideline into the box. Emma Binks one-timed the ball toward the bottom-left corner, but her attempt was denied by Williams' goaltender Leyla Kamshad.
  • The best chance for the Ephs of the half came at the 25:18 mark. Buckingham beat a defender and flicked the ball towards the goal, but Poppinga dove to deny the close-range attempt and keep the game scoreless heading to the halftime break.
  • Eph Emma Lynch had a good opportunity to break into the scoring column with 51:01 elapsed. Lynch and Tolliver set up a give-and-go, but Middlebury's Maddie Schin came charging out to deny the initial shot by Tolliver. The ball deflected and Lynch was there to one-time it, but the shot sailed above the crossbar.
  • Williams tallied the lone goal at the 60:09 mark. Tess Belnap challenged a Panther defender, and the deflection went to Tolliver at the top of the box. Tolliver made a move and buried the ball in the upper-left corner for the 1-0 edge.
  • Middlebury had a good chance to tie the contest during the 67th minute. Ellie Bavier sent a free kick from the top of the 18 into the penalty box area. The initial bid by Hunter Furman was blocked and sent everyone scrambling in front of the goal. Ella Gagnon was able to get her foot on the loose ball, but her attempt from the doorstep was smothered by Kamshad.
  • The best opportunity for the equalizer came during the 75th minute. Bavier sent a cross from the right sideline into the middle of the box. The ball ping-ponged around before Fanny Lodge collected it and blasted a shot on goal, but Kamshad was there to deny the bid and secure the 1-0 victory.
NOTES
  • Today's game marked the 700th contest in program history.
  • With the loss, Middlebury saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
  • The Panthers are one of just three teams to qualify for every NESCAC Tournament.
  • Poppinga recorded a season-best seven saves in goal.
