Women’s Soccer Falls 2-1 To Trinity In Quarterfinal Action

The fourth-seeded Middlebury women's soccer team fell 2-1 to fifth-seeded Trinity in a NESCAC Quarterfinal contest. The Panthers will be idle for a week, waiting to see their fate in the NCAA Tournament when the field is announced on Monday, November 7.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Bantams looked to get on the scoreboard first at the 12:17 mark of the opening half, but a long-range shot by Sadie Rudolph was saved by Middlebury goalie Sydney Poppinga diving to her right.
  • The Panthers had a good scoring chance with 17:37 elapsed, but Lucy Patton's blast from 30 yards out sailed just over the crossbar.
  • Middlebury continued its pressure, producing a quality opportunity with 31:29 expired. Ellie Bavier raced down the right side, ripping a shot from eight yards that Trinity goalie Mariana Cournoyer saved with her legs.
  • The Bantams scored the contest's first goal at the 33:19 mark. Gabby Grattan sent a ball over the top of the Panther defensive line that had Hannah Storuzuk and Poppinga charging toward it. Storuzuk knocked Poppinga down to flick the loose ball to teammate Mia Fusco. Fusco charged toward the loose ball and booted it into the net for the 1-0 halftime edge.
  • The Bantams doubled the advantage exactly 12 minutes into the second half, as Dot Tilden took a left-footed bending shot from outside the box that tucked into the upper-right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
  • Middlebury looked to cut the deficit in half at the 68:23 mark, but Fanny Lodge's blast from 20 yards away following a nice spin move was punched over the crossbar by Cournoyer.
  • Three minutes later, Panther Sophia Cole one-timed a right-footed attempt that hit the left post and caromed back into the field.
  • Middlebury sliced the Bantam lead in half (2-1) with 11:49 remaining in the contest. After a free kick, Elise Morris pounced on the loose ball and snuck it just inside the right post for her first career goal.
  • The Panthers looked for the equalizer in the final minute, but Cournoyer came off her line to deny a bending shot from 40 yards away by Bavier for the final 2-1 tally.
NOTES
  • Morris becomes the 15th player this season to score a goal and the 17th to tally at least a point for Middlebury.
