Women’s Basketball Edges Connecticut College 51-47

Gianna Palli grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
Box Score The Middlebury women's basketball team (10-7, 4-1) edged Connecticut College 51-47 on the road on Sunday. The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday when they head back to Connecticut to take on Trinity at 5:00 p.m. The Camels (3-14, 1-4) host Bates on Friday at 7:00 p.m. 
 
Connecticut College opened the game with six-straight points, capped by a pair of layups from Emily Tripp. Middlebury answered, knotting the game 6-6 on a layup from Bethany Lucey at the 6:05 mark. The contest was tied twice more before a free throw from Rebecca Oberman-Levine gave the Camels a 15-13 edge at the end of the quarter.
 
Trailing 26-19 with 4:34 remaining in the half, the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 26 points apiece heading into intermission. Claire Miller tallied the final three points of the span with a layup and a charity toss.
 
The third stanza was a defensive battle, with neither team able to hold a sizable lead. Connecticut College's Jaycie Rojik converted a pair of free throws to give the hosts a 36-34 edge with 3:17 to go in the period as neither team was able to score after that. 
 
Abby Illusorio sank a shot from beyond the arc at the 7:53 mark of the fourth quarter to give the Camels a 39-34 advantage. Middlebury regained the lead (42-39) with back-to-back treys from Reagan McDonald. Trailing by one (45-44) with under two minutes to go, Panther Alexa Mustafaj converted two free throws to make it 46-45. With just 22 ticks left on the clock, Mustafaj extended the Middlebury advantage to 49-45 with a shot from beyond the arc. Connecticut College's Oberman made a layup with 17 seconds remaining to close the gap to two (49-47), but that was as close as it would get. Panthers Mustafaj and Emily Downer each converted a free throw in the final seconds to secure the 51-47 victory.
 
Mustafaj led all players with 15 points, while Gianna Palli grabbed a game-high 14 boards and a pair of blocks. McDonald chipped in with 10 points, while Lucey had six points.
 
Oberman-Levine paced the Camels with a double-double, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds. Rojik and Molly Cronin each chipped in with eight points.
