An exciting third period that saw a combined five goals scored in 14 minutes led to a 3-3 tie for the Middlebury men's hockey team (1-7-1) at Plattsburgh State (8-5-3) on Friday. The Panthers return home on Tuesday when they host #11 Norwich at 7:00 p.m.
Out of the gates, Middlebury goalkeeper
Jake Horoho was peppered with shots from all directions, but the sophomore did a good job turning all of them away. In the opening period, he had 14 saves to keep the contest 0-0 heading into the break.
After over 30 minutes of scoreless play, Middlebury opened the scoring. At 12:49, with 39 seconds remaining with the extra player,
Wyatt Pastor netted the first goal of his career to make it a 1-0 game.
The third period saw a lot of action with five goals being scored. Plattsburgh's Trey Thomas knotted the game at 1-1 at the 3:01 mark, before
Paul Fine-Lease moved Middlebury ahead at 6:51 with his first collegiate tally. The edge didn't last long with Cardinals' Mitchell Hale netting the equalizer at 9:34.
Andrej Hromic countered 69 seconds later to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
Middlebury enjoyed a slight edge until the 14-minute mark, when Thomas was back for his second of the night, making it a 3-3 game with just over five minutes to go. The Cardinals used the last three minutes to let loose, but all 10 attempts were thwarted by Horoho.
Neither team was able to find the game-winner during the extra session.
Horoho recorded a season-high 45 saves during the contest, while Plattsburgh's Brandon Wells turned away 14 Middlebury shots.
