Middlebury overcame a pair of one-goal deficits to earn a 2-2 tie against visiting Bowdoin on Friday. The Panthers (1-7-2, 0-6-1) are home again on Saturday, hosting Colby at 4:00 p.m., while the Polar Bears (4-5-4, 4-3-3) play their third game in as many days at Williams at the same time.
Middlebury had a couple of chances to open the scoring midway through the initial period, with the first coming on a shot from the point by
Andrew Malatesta. Bowdoin goalie Alex Kozic made the save and denied the follow-up bid from
Paddy Bogart with his pad. With 6:31 on the clock,
Wyatt Pastor led Middlebury on a 2-on-1, but Kozic steered the puck away with his blocker.
The Polar Bears opened the scoring on a power play, as Joe Alexander one-timed a pass from Graham Rutledge in the left circle with 5:31 remaining before the intermission.
The teams traded goals in the middle stanza, with the Panthers pulling even with 1:06 expired.
Jack Clarner sent a shot from the left point that hit off
Zach Shapiro by the right post and went into the net. The Polar Bears regained their one-goal cushion at the 6:30 mark, as Alexander netted his second of the contest from the slot on a nice set up by Andy Stoneman. That goal also came with Bowdoin on the power play.
Middlebury knotted the score at 2-2 with 7:38 expired in the final frame, as Clarner's shot through traffic from the left point resulted in his first collegiate tally. The Panther came up with two late penalty kills to send the game into overtime.
Each goalie came up big during the extra session with
Jake Horoho making two of his 19 stops for the Panthers, while Kozic denied all three attempts he faced to finish with 36.
