Amherst netted five goals in the second period, propelling the visiting Mammoths (3-6-1, 2-4-1) past the Middlebury men's hockey team 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon in Kenyon Arena. The Panthers (1-7-0, 0-6-0) head to Plattsburgh State on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. start, while Amherst is home at the same time against Connecticut College.
The Mammoths had a good opportunity to open the scoring in the first period with a power play at the 8:26 mark. Middlebury was solid in muting the advantage, allowing only a pair of shots from the perimeter.
Chris Garbe provided the Panthers with a chance minutes later with his rising shot from the left circle that was sticked away by Mammoth goalie Connor Leslie. The hosts tallied in the closing minute on a play following an icing call against Amherst.
Tyler Capello won the draw to
EMack Bentley, who slid a pass to the point for
Sam Amato. Amato one-timed the offering past Leslie for his first collegiate goal with 26.9 seconds left before the intermission.
Amherst tied the game 1-1 at the 4:23 mark of the middle stanza when Michael Pitts scored from close range. Less than three minutes later, the visitors took the lead when Sean Wrenn's wrist shot from the left circle got past Panther goalie
Adam Wisco for a power-play marker. Ben Kuzma and Connor McGinnis scored 1:05 apart for the Mammoths midway through the frame for a 4-1 cushion, before tacking on another score with 1.2 seconds on the clock, as Pitts picked the corner of the net from the slot.
The hosts started the final 20 minutes looking to gain some momentum and got it when Garbe raced up the left side. The Panther wired a shot over Leslie's right shoulder for his team-leading third goal of the season with 15:22 on the clock. Amherst, however, came right back when Pitts completed his hat trick 44 seconds later, putting a shot off the right post and in for a 6-2 advantage.
Bentley drew the Panthers a goal closer at the 11:18 mark, backhanding in a rebound as he slid across the top of the crease. Middlebury pulled its goalie for an extra skater with 3:47 remaining, but the difference stayed at three goals at the final horn.
Wisco (40:00) finished with 14 saves for Middlebury and
Jake Horoho (16:13) added four in the final period. Leslie finished with 24 stops for the Mammoths, as the Panthers held a 27-24 edge in shots on goal.
