Middlebury scored a pair of second-half goals to secure a 2-0 victory over #23 St. Lawrence (4-1-2) Sunday afternoon on Dragone Field. The 22nd-ranked Panthers (6-2) return to action next Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. kickoff at Connecticut College.
Â
The first half saw neither team with any great scoring chances as the game went into the halftime break scoreless.
Â
Middlebury turned up the pressure in the second stanza and had a pair of shots by
Sarah Guest and
Eliza Van Voorhis sail just over the crossbar in the 52nd and 59th minutes.
Â
The Panthers broke through at the 59:16 mark with the second of the season from Van Voorhis. After a quick one-touch to herself from 33 yards out, she lofted a hard shot into the top right corner of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
Â
Van Voorhis nearly doubled the lead in the 73rd minute, but her shot from 18 yards out on the right side skipped off the crossbar and over the net. Four minutes later, Middlebury had another great chance on a restart.
Magnolia Moskun served the ball to
Maddie Schin, who one-touched it to
Ellie Bavier, but her shot went just high.
Â
The hosts gained some breathing room at the 77:59 mark when Moskun netted her first of the season.
Joely Virzi played a nice through ball into the box that was kicked out by a St. Lawrence defender. Moskun gathered the ball and quicky put a shot into the back of the net from the 18 for the 2-0 final.
Â
Middlebury finished the contest with a 21-3 shots advantage and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Sydney Poppinga made two saves in goal to earn her fourth shutout of the season, while Keely Snode made six stops in net for the Saints.
