Top-Ranked Middlebury Cruises Past St. John Fisher, 6-0

The Middlebury field hockey team ran its winning streak to 15-straight victories, posting a 6-0 shutout at St. John Fisher (3-4) on Sunday. The top-ranked Panthers (7-0) remain on the road Tuesday, heading to Skidmore for a 4:00 p.m. start.

Middlebury jumped out in front early on a nice individual effort by Katie George. The Panther beat a defender on the left side, cut to the front of the cage, before putting a shot inside the far post. The tally was her seventh of the season and came with 4:52 expired in the opening frame. The visitors doubled the advantage with 6:47 showing on the clock, as Audrey Lazar tucked in a short shot in the goal mouth off a pass from Caroline Segal.

In the second stanza, the Panthers tacked on another goal that originated on a penalty corner. After working the ball around the top of the arc after the insert, Erin Nicholas fired a shot from the right side for her team-leading 10th tally of the season with 7:33 left in the half. With just over a minute left before the break, Lazar made it a 4-0 cushion, redirecting a high shot from Ellie Hughes for her second of the contest.

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, the Panther defense held its ground, holding the hosts without a shot on a pair of penalty corners 12 seconds apart. Middlebury increased the margin to 5-0 with 2:46 left in the frame, as Lilly Branka tipped in a shot from Chandler off a penalty corner.

Selin Everett capped the win for Middlebury in the final 15 minutes, cashing in on a penalty stroke. The Panther slid a shot inside the left post with 8:30 on the clock to make it a 6-0 final.

Grace Harlan (one save) and KK Newton (one stop) each played a half and shared the shutout for Middlebury. Trozzi finished with 16 saves for St. John Fisher, as the Panthers held a lopsided 28-3 advantage in shots and boasted a 12-4 edge in penalty corners.
