Middlebury erased a late one-goal deficit at Hamilton, but the host Continentals netted the deciding tally in overtime, as the Panthers fell 3-2 on Saturday. The loss dropped #22 Middlebury to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in NESCAC play, while Hamilton moved to 4-0-1 and 3-0-1 in league play. The Panthers are right back on the field on Sunday, hosting #23 St. Lawrence at 2:00 p.m.
The Continentals jumped out to the early lead, getting a goal 7:32 into the contest. Caroline Dawson fired a shot from just beyond the top of the penalty area that went into the left corner of the Middlebury net.
The Panthers pulled even with 24:24 showing on the clock on a tally by
Simone Ameer. Ameer carried the ball up the far left side and cut to the middle of the field. Once free, she fired a long arcing shot from well outside the box and into the top-right corner of the net over the outstretched hand of Hamilton goalie Caity Smith.
Hamilton regained the lead at 2-1 with 12:32 left in the opening frame, as Olivia Zubarik touched a pass from Cat Gambino past Panther keeper
Sydney Poppinga and deposited the ball into the empty net.
The visitors knotted the score late in regulation off a scramble in front of the Continental net.
Gretchen McGrath was the beneficiary, knocking a loose ball into the right side of the net for her first goal of the season, which came with 9:31 on the clock.
The hosts earned the win in the extra session, scoring with 1:49 expired. After taking a short pass from Zuburik, Rylie Mutton cut to the top of the penalty area a tucked a shot inside the left post for the game winner.
Poppinga finished with three saves for the Panthers, while Smith had a busier day with nine.
Middlebury held a 25-11 advantage in shots and took two of the game's three corner kicks.
Hamilton has excelled against ranked opponents this season, going 2-0-1 in those contests.
