The Middlebury men's soccer team (3-0) tallied a goal with just 5:02 remaining to lift the Panthers past Plattsburgh, 1-0. Middlebury is back in action on Saturday when they host #11 Bowdoin at noon, while the Cardinals (2-2) entertain Vassar on the same day.
Plattsburgh had a great chance to open the scoring with 10 minutes expired when Yusif Okine sent a through ball to Brian Coughlan, but Middlebury goalkeeper
Ryan Grady came charging off his line to deny the shot. The Panthers looked to get on the board at the 29:13 mark, but
Casey Lund's header attempt went just wide right. The best opportunity of the half came from Middlebury with 32:17 expired.
Jordan Saint-Louis carried the ball down the right sideline and sent a cross to
Shane Farrell on the far side. Farrel one-touched the cross to
Brandon Reid, but Reid's one-timer sailed just above the crossbar to keep the contest scoreless at the half.
Out of the intermission, the teams went back-and-forth with no one able to muster up a quality opportunity for over 15 minutes. The Cardinal's best chance of the game came at the 72:15 when Liam Raaen got his head on a corner kick, but Grady was there to thwart the opportunity and keep the game scoreless. With just 5:02 remaining in the half,
Ethan Coomber scored the game-winner.
Liam Sloan took a free-kick from just outside of the 18.
Michael McFarlane got a head on the ball, before Coomber redirected the shot into the goal for the 1-0 victory. The tally was Coomber's first of his career.
Grady made two stops in goal for Middlebury, while Teddy Healy saved one shot for Plattsburgh. The Panthers held a 14-7 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
