Clemson head men's soccer coach Mike Noonan '83 led the eighth-ranked Tigers to their first NCAA Championship since 1987, and third overall, with a 2-0 shutout over #2 Washington.
Now in his 12th season at the helm of the program, Noonan has brought Clemson back to the national spotlight during his tenure. The Tigers have made NCAA Tournament appearances in seven of the last eight seasons and were the national runner-up in 2015. In 2020, Clemson claimed its second ACC Championship under Noonan's direction, while winning the ACC Regular Season Title in 2019. Noonan and his staff were tabbed the 2020 United Soccer Coaches South Region Staff of the Year. Noonan was tabbed the ACC Coach of the Year in 2019 and the National Coach of the Year in 2015.
The 2017 Middlebury Hall of Fame inductee was a two-time All-American as a defender for the Panther men's soccer team. Noonan's teams made two ECAC Tournament appearances, compiling an 8-4-2 record in 1979 and a 9-2-2 mark in 1981. He served as a team captain his senior year, anchoring one of the region's top defenses. Upon graduation, Noonan was drafted by the Memphis Americans professional soccer team in 1981 and later went on to play professionally in Sweden, as well as for the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) and the American Indoor Soccer Association (AISA). In 1985, he was an AISA All-Star.
Following his playing days, Noonan embarked on a widely successful coaching career with stints at Wheaton (Mass.), the University of New Hampshire and Brown before taking over at Clemson.
