The Middlebury men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to #20 Amherst Sunday afternoon on South Street Field. The sixth-ranked Panthers (6-2-0, 3-2-0) return to action on Saturday when they host Bates at noon, while the Mammoths (8-1-0, 4-1-0) are at Wesleyan on the same day.
The game's lone goal came at the 21:39 mark from Sebastian Derby. Middlebury attempted to clear the ball out of the area, but the ball hit a Panther and fell to the feet of German Giammattei. He quickly touched the ball to Derby, who ripped a left-footed shot into the right corner of the net from 15 yards out.
Middlebury had a chance for the equalizer in the 27th minute, but a hard cross by Brendan Barry was cleared away by the Mammoth defense.
In the second half, Amherst's Ada Okorogheye saw his header attempt go over the crossbar in the 48th minute, before Middlebury keeper Ryan Grady punched out Okorogheye's bending corner kick.
The Mammoths had a look to double their lead in the 65th minute, this one by Niall Murphy, but Grady deflected the shot over the post.
Middlebury's best chance to even the score came in the final five minutes when Jordan Saint-Louis served a ball from the left side that Ben Powers was able to get a head on, but the shot went wide right as Amherst held on for the 1-0 win.
The guests held an 8-5 shots advantage in the game with corner kicks tied at five apiece. Grady finished with a pair of saves in net, while Kofi Hope-Gund made one stop for Amherst.Â
