Middlebury Sweeps Williams On Senior Night

The Middlebury volleyball team (19-4, 6-3) cruised past Williams 3-0 on senior night. The Panthers remain unbeaten in Pepin Gymnasium this season with a 9-0 mark. Prior to the start of the match, Middlebury honored seniors Corley Doyle, Isabella Marcus, Jane Nelson, Maggie Wise, Ali Wheeler and student assistant coach Jack English. Both teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday, with the Panthers hosting Hamilton at 2:00 p.m. and the Ephs (13-5, 6-3) traveling to Amherst. 
 
Williams jumped out to a 9-5 advantage in the first set, before Middlebury responded with a five-point spurt for the 10-9 edge. The match was tied three times, before the Panthers took an 18-16 lead capped on a kill by Laney Sullivan. The teams traded the next three points, before Middlebury scored four times to increase the advantage to 23-18. Williams responded and cut the deficit to three (24-21), but the Panthers tallied the final point for the 25-21 victory.
 
Trailing 9-6 in the second stanza, Middlebury tied the match 9-9. The spurt was highlighted by a pair of kills from Nelson. The match was tied four more times before Williams took a lead (17-14) capped on a kill by Marit Hoyem. Tied at 18-18, Ephs Hoyem and Lydia Kurtz tallied back-to-back kills for the two-point edge. Nelson and Doyle responded with a kill each to even the score at 20-20. The teams traded the next three points, before a three-point spurt gave Middlebury a 24-22 edge. Tazmin Appiah answered for Williams to bring the team within one, but Doyle recorded the final kill to make it a 25-23 win for the Panthers.
 
In the final frame, the Ephs jumped out to an 8-4 early advantage. Middlebury chipped away at the deficit, getting within one (10-9) on a kill from Lucy Ambach. Williams extended its lead to 11-9, before the Panthers went on a 8-0 run to take a 17-11 advantage. Katie Kraczkowsky closed out the span with a service ace for Middlebury. The Ephs wouldn't go away, cutting the deficit to 21-17, but the Panthers recorded the final four points of the match for the 25-17 victory. 
 
Wise led all players with 11 kills, while Gabbie O'Toole recorded a match-high 32 assists. Kelly Ferrero dug up 17 balls, while Ambach had five blocks during the victory. 
 
Kurtz recorded a team-high nine kills for Williams, while Sidra Wohlwend led all players with 25 digs.
