The Middlebury women's soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 2-1 road win at Williams (6-8-1, 2-7-1) on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers (11-3-1, 6-3-1) have earned the fourth seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament and will host fifth-seeded Connecticut College in a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday with a time TBD.
Williams had a chance to get on the board in the 10th minute, but Liz Girvin's shot from 25 yards out on the left side was deflected off the crossbar by Panther keeper
Lucy VanNewkirk.
Middlebury got on the board at the 25:19 mark on the third goal of the season from
Gretchen McGrath.
Ellie Bavier served the ball to the middle from 40 yards out on the right side, where Williams' goalkeeper Chelsea Taylor came out to challenge. The ball slipped through her hands to McGrath, who took advantage of a wide-open net.
The Ephs had a chance to tie it up just minutes into the second half, but Van Newkirk smothered a shot from close range by Mikayla Kappes.
Williams knotted the game at 1-1 at the 56:19 mark of the second half. Aspen Pierson crossed a ball from close range on the left to Victoria Laino, who one-touched it into the far side of the net for the equalizer.
The Panthers answered with the game winner at 62:52 when
Eliza Robinson's corner kick from the left bent into the back of the net off the hand of Taylor. That would be the game's final goal Middlebury emerged with the 2-1 victory.
Van Newkirk made a career-high five saves in goal to pick up the win, while Taylor made one stop for the hosts.
The victory extended Middlebury's unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1), while snapping a three-game winning streak for Williams.
