Box Score Middlebury's
Eliza Robinson netted the game-winning goal with 13:57 remaining on Saturday, lifting the fourth-seeded Panthers (12-3-1) to a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded Connecticut College (9-4-3) in the NESCAC Quarterfinals. With the win, the Panthers advance to the championship weekend of the tournament hosted by top-seeded Amherst and will face the Mammoths in a semifinal at 11:00 a.m.
The defenses from each team held their ground throughout the opening half and didn't allow any quality scoring chances. That changed in the waning moments, while Robinson fired a shot from the 20-yards out that grazed off the top of the cross bar with 1:20 showing on the clock.
The scoring opportunities came in the second frame, with the visitors breaking the ice 8:49 into the new stanza. Conn. College's Kat Norton sent a cross from the right side that got knocked down by a Panther defender, but Claire Mulvihill gathered the loose ball and tucked it into the left corner of the net for the 1-0 edge.
Middlebury had a quick answer, as
Joely Virzi tied the game at 1-1 only 1:25 later. The Panther carried the ball to the middle of the field along top of the box, fired a shot that hit off a Camel defender and then the left post before rolling into the net.
Ellie Bavier set up the game-winning winning goal with a long cross from the far wing that Robinson one touched off the right post for the score.
Middlebury came close to adding an insurance goal with less than six minutes remaining, but
Gretchen McGrath's tally was negated by an offsides call.
Panther keeper
Sydney Poppinga earned the win with three saves, while Sarah Hall finished with five stops for the Camels.
Middlebury concluded the game with a 14-9 advantage in shots and 4-1in corner kicks.
