The top-ranked Middlebury field hockey (15-0, 10-0) team wrapped up the regular season with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory at 10th-ranked Williams (11-4, 6-4) on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Panthers extended their win streak to 23-straight games, with a 6-0 mark against ranked teams this season. Middlebury will be the top seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament, and will host eigth-seeded Bates on Saturday, with the time to be determined.
The Ephs controlled play for most of the first quarter, taking six penalty corners over the opening 9:34, but a strong Panther defense kept the game scoreless.
Williams looked to get on the board at the 19:41 mark, but Elizabeth Welch's attempt went just wide left. The best scoring chance for either team came with just 1:33 remaining in the half. Middlebury's
Sadie LeStage sent a pass from the goal line to
Katie George in front of the cage, but George's diving attempt was thwarted by Williams' goalie Carson Stephenson.
Isabel Chandler one-timed the rebound, but was again denied by Stephenson as the teams headed into the break knotted 0-0.
Out of the intermission,
Erin Nicholas had a great opportunity to tally a goal at the 31:58 mark. After breaking into the circle, she eluded a pair of Williams' defenders, but Stephenson came charging off her line to deny the shot. Less than two minutes later, Nicholas buried a penalty stroke in the bottom left corner of the cage to give the Panthers a 1-0 edge. The Ephs had an extra player advantage beginning at the 42:44 mark, but Middlebury held strong and did not allow Williams to get a shot off.
The Ephs found the equalizer at the 49:24 mark. An initial shot by Molly Hellman was denied by Panther goalie
Grace Harlan, before Emily Batchelor tipped-in the loose ball to make it 1-1. Nicholas had a good look to give Middlebury the lead less than a minute later, but goalie Gates Tenerowicz batted the ball down with her stick. The Ephs had a pair of chances in the final minutes of regulation, but Harlan denied both, sending the teams into overtime.
The Panthers tallied the game winner at the 66:46 mark after their fourth penalty corner of the extra session. Chandler stopped the insert by
Joan Vera, before sending a pass to Nicholas on the left side of the circle. Nicholas lifted the ball over the Williams goalie for the 2-1 final. The tally was Nicholas' 17th of the season.
Harlan made four saves in goal to pick up her 36th career victory. Stephenson made one stop during the first half for the Ephs, while Tenerowicz made five saves over the final 36:46. Middlebury held an 11-7 advantage in shots, while Williams had a 9-7 edge in penalty corners.
