Volleyball Sets Program Record With 14-Match Win Streak

The Middlebury volleyball team (14-0) earned a pair of victories on Saturday, setting a program record for consecutive wins at 14. The old mark of 12-straight victories was set during the 2000 season, as the Panthers extend their home victory streak to 8-0. Middlebury started the day with a 3-1 triumph over Endicott (9-4), before downing Clarkson 3-1 later in the day. The Panthers are back in action on Friday when they head to Wesleyan for a 7:30 p.m. start. 
 
Middlebury opened the day facing Endicott with the Gulls claiming the opening set. The visitors trailed early on, but took their first lead at 11-10 on a solo block by Colleen McAvoy. The Panthers were never able to regain the lead, falling 25-21 in the initial frame.
 
Middlebury came out strong in the second stanza, going on an 8-0 to forge a 12-3 advantage. Kelly Ferrero sparked that burst with seven service points, including a pair of aces. The Panthers took the second set 25-11, as Corley Doyle hammered home a kill for the final point.
 
Another good start in the third set carried the hosts to a 2-1 edge. Lucy Ambach recorded five-straight service points for a 5-0 cushion. The biggest difference came on the final point, as Middlebury's Katie Kraczkowsky record an ace for the 25-16 victory.
 
The Panthers iced the win, scoring a 25-15 decision in the fourth game. Middlebury never trailed as the team raced out to a 12-2 lead. The Gulls never got closer than six points (13-7) as the hosts went on to break the school record for consecutive wins.
 
Doyle led all players with 13 kills and added one solo block and four blocking assists, while Maggie Wise knocked down a dozen kills. Gabbie O'Toole finished with 32 assists, Ferrero had 14 digs and Kraczkowsky had five aces.
 
McAvoy paced Endicott with seven kills and four solo blocks, while Lauren McGrath dished out 26 assists and Alexandra Tecun had 10 digs.
 
In the first set against Clarkson (10-7), Middlebury jumped out to an 18-13 lead in the first set, but the Golden Knights battled back to knot the set at 21-21. The contest saw three more ties before Clarkson solidified the 26-24 victory on a service ace from Emma Baxter. 
 
With the Panthers leading 15-11 in the second stanza, the team's traded the next seven points before Middlebury tallied seven of the final eight points to knot the match 1-1 with a 25-16 second-set victory.
 
The third session saw the score tied eight times, before a service ace from Wise gave the Panthers a 20-19 edge. Clarkson wouldn't go away as the teams traded the next five points, before back-to-back kills from Kraczkowsky and Wise solidified the 25-22 win.
 
The Golden Knights led 14-10 in the fourth set before Middlebury tallied seven unanswered points to regain the advantage (17-14). Clarkson cut the deficit to one point on two occasions, but the Panthers held strong en route to the 25-22 victory.
 
Doyle led Middlebury with 14 kills and seven blocks, while O'Toole registered 39 assists and Ferrero dug up 22 balls.
 
Kristine Werdine led all players with 23 kills, while Baxter recorded a game-high 29 digs. Isabelle Crow recorded a game-best 51 assists.
