Third-Period Surge Leads Field Hockey Past Connecticut College

Box Score Top-ranked Middlebury scored three goals in the third quarter on its way to a 7-2 road win over Connecticut College (1-6, 0-5) on Saturday. The Panthers (8-0, 4-0) return to action on Sunday when they host #6 Amherst at 1:00 p.m.
 
Connecticut College jumped out early, taking advantage of a turnover just 5:24 into the game on a goal from Abby Marchand. The deficit marked the first time all season the Panthers have trailed and was also the inaugural first-half goal allowed.
 
Just over three minutes later, Katie George evened the contest at 1-1 with her ninth goal of the season. Middlebury kept up the pressure for the remainder of the half, but entered the intermission in a 1-1 tie. The Panthers held a 14-1 shots lead and a 9-0 penalty corner advantage in the first 30 minutes.
 
Middlebury went on top 4:39 into the second half with the second of the game from George. Amy Griffin's initial bid was denied by Camel keeper Jackie Mountford, but George was there to put home the rebound.
 
Isabel Chandler earned her third goal of the season on a penalty corner at the 41:50 mark, converting a feed from Joan Vera. Less than two minutes later. Sadie Lestage gave the visitors a 4-1 advantage when she recorded her second of the year.
 
The lead grew to 5-1 at the 49:22 mark when Meg Shelburne scored in front, falling to the ground after a nice touch from LeStage. The goal was the Shelburne's career.
 
Just over two minutes later, Ellie Hughes also scored her first-career tally, this one coming on a penalty corner.
 
Meg Fearey added a goal for the Panthers, before Rowan Galanis of Connecticut College scored the final tally of the game, making it a 7-2 game.
 
Grace Harlan played 54 minutes in net for the Panthers, while KK Newton saw six minutes of action and made a save. Marchand finished with 11 saves in net for the Camels.
 
The visitors finished with a 31-3 advantage in shots and a 16-1 lead in penalty corners.
 
With the victory, Middlebury extended its winning streak to 17 games.
