Football Suffers Loss At Trinity

Middlebury dropped to 1-2 on the season with a 28-0 loss at Trinity (3-0) on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers return home next weekend to host Amherst at 2:00 p.m.
 
Middlebury drove to the Trinity 18 on its opening series of the game, before quarterback Will Jernigan was intercepted by William Crowley.
 
The Bantams got on the board at the 5:39 mark of the first quarter when Spencer Fetter found Jack Barrett for a 10-yard touchdown pass over the middle. Fetter connected twice with Devante Reid on the drive, once for 32 yards and the other connection for 18.
 
Late in the half, the teams exchanged interceptions just before the break. Jernigan was picked by Justin O'Neil-Riley at midfield, before Panther Liam Roy returned the favor one play later at the Middlebury 29.
 
The Bantams extended the lead to 14-0 at the 9:12 mark of the third quarter when Fetter found Thomas Walsh 10 yards away, before he sprinted down the field for a 57-yard scoring strike.
 
Late in the quarter, Cole Kennon, on in relief of quarterback Will Jernigan, broke loose for a 45-yard run to the Trinity 20-yard line. Three plays later in the fourth quarter, Brian Casagrande picked off a pass and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown. The hosts now led 21-0 with 14:41 on the clock.
 
The Bantams sealed the game with an 87-yard drive, resulting in an 18-yard rushing touchdown by William Kirby with 4:43 remaining.

Middlebury had one last chance late in the game to breakup the shutout, but the Panthers turned the ball over on downs deep in Trinity territory.

Jernigan completed 7-17 passes for 59 yards with two interceptions in the first half, rushing for 37 yards to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in his career. He left the game at halftime with an injury. Kennon went 5-13 for 42 yards, while rushing for 26 yards. Greg Livingston caught six passes for 50 yards to lead the receivers. Roy led the Panther defense with seven tackles to go along with an interception, while Charles Roselle and Ryan Whitney had five stops apiece. Cole Crider averaged 44.6 yards over nine punts.

Fetter was 18-31 for the hosts, throwing for 319 yards with a pair of touchdowns and one interception. Reid caught eight passes for 146 yards, while Kirby earned 94 total yards. Matt McCarthy led all tackles with 10 stops for the Bantams.

Trinity outgained Middlebury 424-228 on the afternoon, including a 341-118 edge in the air.
