Middlebury threatened to tie the game twice in the fourth quarter, but Amherst (3-1) held them off, as the Panthers (1-3) suffered a 17-10 loss on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. Middlebury returns to action next Saturday at Colby, while Amherst remains on the road and heads to Bowdoin.
The Mammoths took advantage of an interception by Matt Durborow for its first score, driving 60 yards on 13 plays, capped by a three-yard rush by Kellen Field.
Middlebury responded with a 10-play, 90-yard drive that took just 3:34. Quarterback Cole Kennon moved the ball down the field with a 14-yard rush, before hooking up with Charlie Reinkemeyer for 14 yards. The duo connected again on the next play, this time for a 16-yard scoring strike to knot the game at 7-7.
Amherst went on top 14-7 in the second quarter after a roughing the kicker penalty extended the drive. Quarterback Mike Piazza connected with Turner Garland for a 17-yard touchdown to put the guests on top, 14-7.
The Mammoths extended their lead with 59 ticks remaining in the third quarter with a 42-yard field goal from Conor Kennelly. The Panthers answered when Andrew Haas connected from 20 yards out on the ensuing drive early in the fourth, making it a 17-10 contest.
Middlebury had a great chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter after a muffed punt reception left them the ball at the Amherst 11. The Mammoth defense held, as the Panthers turned the ball over on downs.
 Middlebury had two more possessions in the game, but were unable to find the end zone as Amherst held on for the 17-10 win.
Kennon went 6-9 for 81 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions before being relieved due to injury by Ben Tauber, who was 21-38 for 180 with an interception. Peter Scibilia carried the ball 25 times for 69 yards, while catching eight passes for 40 yards. Jimmy Connell had five receptions for 33 yards, while Donovan Wood (88 yards) and Reinkemeyer (46 yards) each had four receptions. Gordon Pollock paced the defense with 12 tackles, while Jack Pistorius finished with nine stops, including a pair of sacks.
Piazza went 10-23 for Amherst with a touchdown and 83 yards of passing. Kellen Field gained 55 yards on 20 carries, while PJ Ciementi caught three passes for 19 yards. Tim Swope led all tacklers with 17, Joe Kelly made 15 stops with 2 TFL's, while Flynn McGilvray had five stops, 3.5 for lost yardage.
